A possible decider awaits us in Group A at the 2021 ATP Cup in Melbourne Australia. The potential Serbian pairing of Novak Djokovic/Filip Krajinovic of Serbia face German team Kevin Krawietz/Andreas Mies in what is sure to be a close encounter. The match will take place on Thursday February 4th, 2021 at a time yet to be decided. If our singles picks are correct, this will be the deciding match in the tie so tensions will be high. Can the German team upset the defending champions?
Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic were the heroes of the 2020 ATP Cup, leading Team Serbia to the title along with Dusan Lajovic. If this is indeed the deciding doubles matchup and the singles are split at 1-1, expect them to play together as they have done so many times in the past. They are longtime friends and have had some success on tour before. I am sure that they both would prefer to rest and not exert themselves too much as they gear up for the Australian Open but they are always up for the challenge when it comes to representing their country and will definitely not back down from a decider here.
The German team of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies are one of the top doubles pairings here at the ATP Cup and have been very successful on the ATP Doubles Tour. They have won back to back French Open titles in 2019 and 2020. They have been playing together for quite some time and team chemistry will obviously not be a problem. Germany is one of the few teams that have a true "doubles specialist team" here in Melbourne and once they can get at least one point in the singles events they will be in with a very good chance of winning the tie, regardless of the opponent. They are yet to play together here at the ATP Cup but will be ready for the challenge if called.
This match should be a blockbuster. While the German team have a serious doubles pedigree the Serbians are no slouches and won this title together last year. They are also huge competitors and definitely be fired up for this one. It should be very close but I am going to pick Krawietz/Mies to get the win here, and Germany to upset the reigning champions.
