A very tight battle is on our hands here in the second round of the 2021 WTA Grampians Trophy on Thursday, February 4th 2021 as Angelique Kerber meets Ons Jabeur. Will we see another domination by Ons Jabeur or will Kerber show us why she is a Grand Slam Champion?
Angelique Kerber came through a tough 3-set victory over Katerina Siniakova, beating the Czech 6-3/4-6/6-3. Kerber was strong in the first set, however, she let her guard down in the second set, which gave Siniakova the opportunity to get back into the match. Kerber was able to regain her composure in the third set, allowing her to be strong on her serve, and ensure she moved well on her return game. Kerber knows she cannot afford to let her guard down again as the opposition's level will only increase as she moves through the tournament, but will she be able to prevent an upset here?
Ons Jabeur marched through her first round encounter here, beating the Russian Blinkova in straight sets 6-1/6-1. Jabeur did not blink twice as she came on the the court, and was able to get this match done quite quickly as she held her serve, and gave no opportunities to break back to the Russian. Jabeur loves playing down in Australia, and just last year she made it through to the later rounds of the tournament at the Australian Open as people continuously underestimated her. Will Jabeur be able to cause more upsets here as she did in 2020, or will her momentum stop in its tacks in the second round?
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and in my opinion, Ons Jabeur's momentum stops here. Angelique Kerber put in a lot of work in her first round match, and she was tested on many aspects of her game, allowing her to ensure she knows what to expect and be ready for a tough contest. On the other hand, Jabeur walked through her first round match and was not really tested. Although this may seem strange, it is not always the best thing to cruise through an opening match as your body/game aspects all matches to be quite similar following that. This will give the edge to Kerber who will know what to expect, and what to do to get the job done.
