Belinda Bencic is back and we are so excited to see the Swiss superstar back on the WTA Tour after the last few years where she struggled both with consistency and injuries. Bencic meets Sorana Cirstea in the second round of the 2021 WTA Grampians Trophy on Thursday, February 4th 2021, but will she be able to wear off the dust fast enough to get the victory here?
Belinda Bencic had the entire WTA Tour scared of her a few years ago with her incredible shot making, serve, and speed around the court. This made us all believe that she would become a future Grand Slam champion. However, injuries, lack of consistency, and pressure on the young Swiss star has prevented her from reaching the goals she had set out for herself. In 2021, the story is going to change in my opinion. Belinda Bencic has been putting in the effort required behind closed doors to get back to where she used to be, and even better, and this year she is going to give it her all to re-establish herself as a top dog in the WTA Tour. It all starts here at the WTA Grampians Trophy, but will she be able to wear off the dust straight away?
Serena Cirstea absolutely dominated the Gerogian Kalashnikova in the first round, winning in straight sets 6-1/6-1. Cirstea will have gained a lot of confidence out of that matchup, and this will definitely help her play somewhere near her best in the second round where she knows the level of opposition is going to be much higher as she meets Belinda Bencic. Will Cirstea be able to cause an upset here as she has already gotten some solid competitive minutes under her belt?
This is going to be the first meeting between both players. This is going to be an interesting encounter, as Belinda Bencic is the obvious favourite, but she will need to wear off the rust from not competing for a while quickly. I expect it to be a 3 setter perhaps, with both players trying to find form, but at the end of the day, Belinda Bencic’s talent, resilience, and game will ensure she comes through.
