Viktoria Azarenka looks to begin her 2021 Australian tennis swing as she prepares herself for the Australian Open here at the WTA Grampians Trophy on Thursday, February 4th 2021. Azarenka meets Yulia Putintseva in the second round here and it is going to be a very exciting and entertaining matchup. Will Azarenka shine as she did last year at the US Open?
Viktoria Azarenka made an incredible comeback last year on the WTA Tour, making the US Open Final and beating the likes of Serena Williams along the way. Azarenka had an incredible career, but injuries had prevented her from playing her best tennis over the last few years. However, in 2020, everything changed. The Azarenka of old came back, and we can only hope to see this playing style and level from Azarenka again in 2021. Azarenka is one of the best fighters in the game, and she will put all her effort in these matches to get herself well prepared to compete at the Australian Open next week.
Yulia Putintseva put on a solid performance in the first round, beating the Spaniard Garcia Perez in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Putintseva is a tough opponent for anyone to come up against, and she will definitely be filled with confidence coming into this second round match. However, will Putintseva have enough to get past one of the best players on the WTA Tour in Viktoria Azarenka to book her spot in the quarterfinals, or will she turn her focus to the Australian Open?
This is going to be the first meeting between both players and I expect this to be a very entertaining match, with momentum swings on both sides. But when it comes to who is the better player, and who has the most experience, there is no doubt that Azarenka stands in a league of her own compared to Putintseva. Yulia Putintseva will have to hope that Azarenka comes out extremely rusty and unprepared, however, that is a rare case. I expect Azarenka will win this one in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinals here at the WTA Grampians Trophy.
