We have an extremely interesting encounter on our hands in the quarter finals of the 2021 WTA Yarra Valley Classic as Ashleigh Barty meets Shelby Rogers on Thursday, February 4th 2021. Will Barty continue to impress the home fans here in Australia, or will Rogers be able to cause the upset?
Shelby Rogers have through a very tight 2 set match against Petra Martic, beating the Croatian 7-6(1)/6-3. Rogers showed us that she will fight for every single point in a match, no matter whether she is the underdog or the favourite in the match. Rogers will want to prepare herself very well for this quarterfinal as she knows she will not be given anything easily against the home crowd favourite and the world No.1. Will Shelby be able to up her game drastically in this quarterfinal to potentially cause the upset and book her spot in the semifinals here?
Ashleigh Barty played a tough 3-set match against Marie Bouzkova in the third round, beating the Czech 6-0/4-6/6-3. We see this very often in the women's game, when a player serves a 6-0 bagel to their opponent, they most likely end up losing the following set as they have low expectations of their opponents game. Barty, however, handled the situation quite well and was able to maintain her composure in the third set to book her spot in the semifinals. Barty will be the favourite to lift the title both here and at the Australian Open, but will she accidentally let her guard down and leave the door open for an upset?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Ashleigh Barty leading the head to head 1-0. Shelby Rogers will have to drastically improve her game if she is to get anything out of this match because all the momentum is with Ashleigh Barty. Adding to this, the crowd will play a big part in this match, cheering Barty on no matter what. I believe Barty will win the title here, and Shelby Rogers is just another step along the way.
