Eighth seeded Dan Evans of Great Britain faces unseeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the Semi-Final of the 2021 Murray River Open in Melbourne, Australia. The match is scheduled to take place on Friday February 5th, 2021 at approximately 11:30pm EST. They have played each other three times in the past with the Frenchman winning on each occasion. Can Evans register his first win of the series when it matters the most or will the Frenchman win his fourth consecutive match and advance to the Final?
Dan Evans is currently ranked #33 and is Britain's #1 player. He has been very impressive so far here in Melbourne, winning all three of his matches over Pedro Sousa, Marcos Giron and notably, Borna Coric all in straight sets. He has a very unique game style, varying the pace extremely well to unsettle his opponents. He has a good solid serve and his one handed backhand slice is excellent. He will look to use all these tactics in an attempt to register his first win over Chardy, and at this stage of their careers he enters this match at the favorite.
Jeremy Chardy has also had a very good tournament, and has surprised many by reaching the Semis here. He caused three consecutive upsets here thus far, defeating Marin Cilic, Gilles Simon and Taylor Fritz to reach the Quarter-Finals, when Stan Wawinka withdrew, giving him a path to the Semi-Final. Currently ranked #66, the veteran is approaching the end of his career but is still a very dangerous player, utilizing his strong serve and all court game to great effect. He is the slight under dog here but if Evans is not at his best, it would not be surprising in the least to see Chardy get the win here.
This should be a very close affair but I see Evans winning here. His variety and serve should be enough to see him past the Frenchman and he should advance to his first final for the 2021 season. It would not be a shock to see Chardy get the win but the smart money is on the Brit. Dan Evans to win.
