A very exciting matchup is here for us to watch in the semifinals of the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open on Saturday, February 6th 2021 as Jannik Sinner meets Karen Khachanov. Will Khachanov be able to reach the levels which saw him win the 2018 Paris Masters 1000 here, or will Jannik Sinner continue to improve and cement his legacy on the ATP Tour.
Jannik Sinner put on very solid performances in both his third round and quarterfinal match on Thursday, beating the likes of Aljaz Bedene in straight sets 7-6/6-2, and Miomir Kecmanovic as well in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Sinner is just playing incredible tennis at the moment, and he is definitely going to have yet another superb season in 2021 which will see him win more titles. Jannik Sinner knows that if he wins this semifinal encounter, he is definitely going to be the favourite to win the title here, and I am sure this is going to fuel him to play at his best.
Karen Khachanov came through two tight matches in his third round and in his quarterfinal match as he beat Kevin Anderson in straight sets 6-3/7-6, but then struggled in his quarterfinal match when he met Botic Van de Zandschulp in 3 sets coming back from a set down 6-7/7-5/6-3. Karen Khachanov, if he continues to play like this against opponents who are miles lower than him in the level we know he can play, is playing on borrowed time. If Khachanov wants to win the title here, he will have to chance something drastic in the way he plays his game.
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Karen Khachanov leading the head to head 1-0. They met in the first round of the 2020 US Open, where Khachanov won in an extremely tight match where he had to come back from two sets down to win it 7-6 in the fifth set. Unfortunately for Khachanov, I don't see Jannik Sinner giving him an opportunity to get into the match and make a comeback again now. Sinner has improved since then, and Khachanov has not. I expect Sinner to put on a show here and make his way to the Final.
