Thiago Monteiro meets Stefano Travaglia in what is going to be a very tight matchup in the semifinals of the 2021 Great Ocean Road Open on Saturday, February 6th 2021. Will it be another Thiago Monteiro domination, or will Travaglia continue to fight back as the underdog and book his spot in the final?
Stefano Travaglia played two matches on Friday due to the Thursday cancellation of play issues which caused both the third round and the quarterfinals to be played on Friday, but he put on incredible performances in both matches he played, when he was the underdog in both! Travaglia firstly beat Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-1/7-5 before going to the quarterfinals and beating the man who had not lost a set in about 7 matches, Hubert Hurkacz, coming back from a set down to win in 3 sets 3-6/6-3/7-5. Travaglia is putting on some extremely solid performances on a surface he is not as comfortable on compared to clay, but will he be able to keep this up against another tough opponent in Thiago Monteiro?
Thiago Monteiro cruised through both his third round and quarterfinal match on Friday to book his spot here in the semifinals as he beat the up and coming Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets 7-6/6-3, as well as the local favourite Jordan Thompson in straight sets again 6-4/6-4. Thiago Monteiro very much enjoys these playing conditions and he will be very confident looking at the remaining 4 players in the tournament that if he plays his best tennis, he can definitely challenge for the title.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is definitely going to be a very tight and exciting matchup to decide who makes the final on Sunday. Stefano Travaglia has been playing some superb tennis in the tournament, beating all his opponents when he was the underdog. Thiago Monteiro has also put on extremely solid performances here, showing us his strength and prowess on the court. I think that Thiago Monteiro should be considered the favourite coming into this match as he just has a much better hard court game. Stefano Travaglia might still be riding the high of beating two much stronger opponents in the same day, and this should give Monteiro the edge to be concentrated and make his way to the final.
