Adrian Mannarino of France faces Dennis Novak of Austria in the First Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday February 7that a time yet to be determined. This will be the first meeting between the two players, who will get the victory and advance to the Second Round?
Mannarino is the final men’s seed in the draw, at #32. Currently ranked #35 in the ATP Rankings but has been as high as #22. He has been a staple in the top 50 for a few years now, and is a very underrated player. After a rough to the 2020 season where he struggled to win any matches, he finished with a bang. Starting off with a quarterfinal appearance at the Cologne Open where he lost to Alexander Zverev, he proceeded to make it to the final of the Nur-Sultan Open, third round of the Paris Masters and then again a semifinal at the Sofia Open to finish the year ranked 35th. He is a very consistent player, who has every shot in the book and very solid on both sides.
Dennis Novak has been Austria's number 2 for quite some time now and has had a solid career to date. Currently ranked #99, he splits his time between the ATP and Challenger tours with some recent success. He made it to the Quarter-Finals at the Cologne Open last year and is one of those players that is very talented but has struggled mentally during matches. He tends to run very "hot and cold" but definitely has potential to cause an upset here with his big game. He had some impressive performances at the ATP Cup last week including a win over Fabio Fognini and will be confident heading into this match.
This can be a close match but I see the experience of Mannarino being the difference here. He is so solid and gives little away so I imagine that Novak will get frustrated and become erratic. Mannarino has the tendency to lose his focus but if he can keep that under control he will win here. Adrian Mannarino to win.
