Sixth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany faces unseeded American Marcos Giron in the First Round of the 2021 Australian Open. The match is scheduled for Sunday February 7th at a time yet to be determined. The two players have never faced each other before. Can the American give the sixth seed a run for his money?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked 7th in the world and is coming off a fine 2020 season where he reached his first Grand Slam Final. While he will obviously still be disappointed to not win the title at the US Open he can take heart in the fact that he finally broke through at a major after struggling there for most of his career. He is a top contender here for the title and is in great form as evidenced by his performances at the ATP Cup. He had heartbreaking three set losses to Djokovic and Medvedev but will take confidence in the fact that he was in complete control for long periods in both matches.
Marcos Giron is currently ranked #72 but has seen a big improvement in his ranking over the past year. After a solid 2020 season where he made his first ATP Quarter-Final, he has carried that momentum over to 2021 with impressive wins over Mmoh and Mannarino at the Murray River Open. He is a very solid baseline player, however he lacks the weapons to truly trouble the top players like Zverev. He enters this match as a huge underdog.
This match will have only one outcome, a victory for Alexander Zverev. He has been in great form so far this year and should have no trouble with the unseeded American. It remains to be seen if his back is still bothering him but even if not at full fitness he should cruise here.
