An interesting match awaits us at the 2021 Australian Open, as 25th seed Benoit Paire of France faces Belarusian Egor Gerasimov in the First Round. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday February 7th, 2021 at approximately 11:30pm EST. They have played each other once before, with Gerasimov winning on that occasion.
Benoit Paire is currently ranked #28 and has been as high as #18 in the world. However, he has struggled for form over the past few months and will need to turn things around quickly if he is to have a successful tournament here. He is a very talented player, with one of the best double handed backhands in the game, but loses focus extremely easily and is known to become disinterested during matches and throw them away, as he did in the ATP Cup. He is hard to predict as you never know if he will be motivated to play on a given day. He does not seem tuned in at the moment and that could spell disaster. That being said, it would not be a shock for him to randomly turn up motivated and play an amazing match but that seems unlikely.
Egor Gerasimov is currently ranked #74 in the world. A late bloomer, he is having the best few years of his career in recent times and is now 28 years of age. He has a very solid all-around game but lacks the major weapons to truly compete with the top players. He seems to be in good form, with two good wins over Fucsovics and Harris in Melbourne last week before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in a third set tiebreaker. He has exactly the type of game to frustrate Paire and will be in with a good chance here with all of Paire's troubles.
I am going with Gerasimov to get the upset here. Paire seemed totally disinterested during the ATP Cup and also seemed to pick up an arm injury. When he is focused he is a very good player but that does not seem to be the case here. That added to the injury worry is not looking good for the Frenchman and I expect him to struggle here. Egor Gerasimov to win.
