Fourteenth seed Milos Raonic of Canada faces unseeded Argentinian Federico Coria in the First Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday February 7th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. This will be the first meeting between the two players, who will come out on top?
Milos Raonic is one of the most experienced and successful players on the ATP Tour today. Once ranked as high as #3, he has struggled with form and fitness over the past few years but is now seemingly back to his best. Currently ranked #15, he will be expected to go deep in the draw here in Australia. His serve is still a huge weapon and he is an extremely intelligent player. One weakness is his movement but he compensates well with his early anticipation. Many of his matches involve tiebreaks and there is sure to be at least one here. Big servers are always favored there, and that along with his great experience will be a huge asset. He enters this match as the huge favorite to win here and to make the second week here in Melbourne.
Federico Coria is perhaps most famous for being the younger brother of former top 5 player Guillermo Coria, but is a solid player in his own right. Currently ranked #92, he was defeated in the Second Round of the Murray River Open by Taylor Fritz. More of a clay court specialist, he has had some big wins in the past showing that he is a dangerous opponent. He has a strong baseline game off both sides and is ultra consistent, but will struggle to contend with the power of Raonic. If he is able to get an early break then anything can happen, but that is easier said than done.
This match will have only one outcome, and that is a comprehensive win for Milos Raonic. If he can stay fit, which is a big if, he is still one of the premier hard-court players in world tennis and he is capable of a deep run here. Milos Raonic to win in straight sets.
