World number 18 Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland faces Pedro Sousa of Portugal in the First Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Sunday February 7th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. Can the unfancied Sousa upset the former champion?
Stan Wawrinka is a three time Grand Slam winner, including the Australian Open. He will enjoy being back in Australia where he has had a lot of success and will be looking for a strong 2021 year as he winds down a historic career. Aged 35, he is still ranked within the top 20 in the world (#18) and is an extremely dangerous player that all the top players will be eager to avoid. On his day he is still capable of beating anyone, but he has struggled with fitness and consistency in recent times. He seemed in mixed form in the warm up tournament, winning two tight three setters before withdrawing in the Round of 16. When fit, he can go toe to toe with the best players in the world and his serve and huge groundstrokes are still to be feared. If he is fully fit he should be very comfortable here.
Pedro Sousa is currently ranked 108 in the world. He lost in the Second Round at the Murray River Open warm up event to Dan Evans, leaving him with just two matches played on the year, not ideal preparation for a Grand Slam event. He is a solid baseline player but enters this match as the firm underdog against fan favorite Wawrinka. More of a clay court player, he has had some decent results on the hard courts but he has never faced an opponent of this caliber. He will have to play the match of his life to make this competitive.
There is nothing in Sousa’s game to suggest that he will be able to trouble the experienced Swiss star. Wawrinka will be eager to win this match in straight sets to conserve his energy and I expect him to get his wish. Stan Wawrinka to win in straight sets.
