The semi finals of the 2021 WTA Grampians Trophy is here as Maria Sakkari meets Anett Kontaveit on Sunday, February 7th 2021. Will Kontaveit be able to make her way to the final here even if he is not the favourite in this semifinal matchup, or will Sakkari continue to dominate?
Anett Kontaveit did not even compete in the quarterfinals as Viktoria Azarenka retired to prepare herself for the Australian Open next week, rather than potentially having to play 3 matches in 2 days here at the Grampians Trophy. Anett Kontaveit is definitely a solid opponent for anyone on the tour, but the real question is, would she have had the talent/game to get her to this semifinal if Viktoria Azarenka did not retire? I personally do not believe she does, and this is why I strongly believe she is going to have to drastically increase her level in this semifinal matchup if she is to stand any chance.
Maria Sakkari has been cruising through the tournament, not losing a single set and playing against some very big players such as Angelique Kerber. Maria Sakkari is definitely the favourite to win the title in my opinion and I have stated this since the start of the tournament. Will Sakkari be able to come out here, play this semifinal and win against a tough opponent in Kontaveit, and then get herself prepared to play the final as well later on Sunday? If there is anyone up to the task, it is surely the young Greek.
This is going to be the 8th meeting between both players, with Maria Sakkari leading the head to head 4-3. They both know each others' game very extensively, and they will know what they need to prepare to ensure they are ready for this tough matchup. I expect both players to play great, but at the end of the day, the best player will win this one. The best player is Maria Sakkari. Maria Sakkari has played incredible tennis all tournament, not lost a set, and has shown us she is determined to make an even bigger name for herself in 2021. Maria Sakkari to win.
