Eighth seeded Bianca Andreescu of Canada faces Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania in the First Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Monday February 8th, 2021 at approximately 1:00am EST. They have played twice before, winning one match each. Can the Romanian cause the upset here?
Bianca Andreescu is making her return to competitive tennis, 15 months after her last official match. She has struggled with injuries since her fairytale run to the title at the 2019 US Open. She has had a major knee injury, so it remains to be seen how she will respond to that. At her best, she is an incredibly powerful player who dominates players from the baseline. A lot of rust is expected so it will be interesting to see how quickly she can shake it off. If her movement is limited due to the knee injury then her opponent is solid enough to take advantage but there have been no reports to suggest that she is anything less than 100%. She clearly took her time with her recovery so all signs seem positive there.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is also coming off of some serious injuries. She was ranked as high as #20 a few years ago but has struggled mightily since then, finding herself ranked outside the top 120. She is a solid baseline player with a particularly good backhand. If there is one weakness to her game it is her serve, which she struggled mightily with in her straight sets loss to Kasatskina in the First Round in Melbourne last week. She is a talented player and certainly capable of causing the upset if her opponent is not at her best, however she is the clear underdog here.
Despite being out of the game for over a year, it is hard to see Andreescu losing here. She is still only 20 years of age and should be a staple in the top 10 for years to come. She may start slowly due to rust but I expect her to shake that off quickly and dominate her opponent. Bianca Andreescu to win.
