The local Australian superstar, Alex de Minaur, meets the veteran, Tennys Sandgren, in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open on Tuesday, February 9th 2021. Will de Minaur be able to bounce back after two tough losses as the ATP Cup last week, or will we see some more incredible Tennys Sandgren performances as we saw last year at the Australian Open?
Tennys Sandgren put on a show for everyone last year at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round, and nearly beating one of the best players of all time, Roger Federer, in an incredible 5-set match. Sandgren turns into a much better player when he plays in Grand Slams, however, this year, he will be much more wary of his ability to go late into the tournament as he has a tough draw right from the get go as he meets de Minaur. Will Sandgren be unable to recreate his 2020 success here, or will de Minaur continue to struggle?
Alex de Minaur was not able to help Team Australia find any success this year at the ATP Cup as the Australian went 0-2 in his singles matches, losing to Roberto Bautista Agut and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Alex de Minaur is definitely a great talent, and he will definitely play a bit part in the future of Men’s tennis in perhaps 5 years, however, the aspect which is missing the most from his game at the moment is consistency. Alex always starts his matches with great intensity, and he looks great and like he is going to run away with games, however, he puts too much energy in every single point and between points, which wears him down much faster than his opponents, who are then able to outlast him in the intensity battle and come away with the match. Will de Minaur find some success here or will his struggles continue?
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is going to be a very interesting one. If Tennys Sandgren comes out playing like he did in the later stages of the tournament last year here at the Australian Open, I would be edging towards him to win it. However, it has been a while since we saw him play that well, and I think the youth, athleticism, and will of the young Australian, Alex de Minaur, will ensure he makes the second round here.
