A very interesting encounter is on our hands as Casper Ruud meets Jordan Thompson in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open on Tuesday, February 9th 2021. Will Thompson give the Australian crowd something to cheer about in this match, or will the up and coming Casper Ruud start his 2021 season off on the right foot?
Jordan Thompson has been getting his preparation in at the Great Ocean Road Open last week and he was not at his best, but he was also not at his worst. Thompson wants to make 2021 the season in which he finally shows us that he should be considered amongst the potential best players for the ATP Cup Team Australia team. Thompson is a solid player, but he lacks consistency in his game. Sometimes he is very competitive and can make the best players work hard to beat him, but other times, he ends up losing to much lower ranked players. Which Jordan Thompson will show up in this first round match?
Casper Ruud had a great 2020 season, breaking through on the ATP Tour and showing us that he can compete with the best, as we saw against the likes of Novak Djokovic, Matteo Berrettini, and Dominic Thiem. Ruud is incredibly fast around the court, and he has a great mindset when playing. He is trained by the Rafael Nadal Academy and plays a lot like the Spaniard as well. Ruud, if he keeps improving, is definitely going to be one of the top players in the world in a few years. However, we haven’t seen him play in a few months, therefore will he be rusty in this first match?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. Although we haven’t seen Casper Ruud play in a few months on the ATP Tour, I am adamant that he will come out here very prepared and ready to put on a show at the Australian Open. Jordan Thompson does not have the game which will allow him to beat opponents of this calibre, and I expect that this is either going to be a 3 or 4 set victory by Casper Ruud to start his 2021 season off right.
