Eighth seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina faces Lucky Loser Alexandre Muller of France in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday February 9th, 2021 at a time yet to be announced. The players have never faced each other before, can the lucky loser get lucky one more time?
Diego Schwartzman is coming off an outstanding 2020 season which saw him break into the top 10 for the first time. He has only played two matches so far in 2021, a straight sets loss to rival Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup and his First Round victory over Elias Ymer in four sets. He is one of the best movers in the world and is very difficult to hit through. He has added an offensive element to his game, taking him to another level. He will enter this match as the overwhelming favorite and should way too much quality for the Frenchman to handle. He struggled a bit in his First Round win, seemingly losing focus for a bit and allowing the Swedish player to steal the third set. While he is the favorite here he will be seeking a much improved performance as he prepares for the later rounds.
Alexandre Muller is a 24 year old French player, currently ranked 245. He made it to the Final Round of the Qualifying Event in Doha, losing to Aslan Karatsev. He received a Lucky Loser entry to the Main Draw here in Melbourne and made the most of it, upsetting top 80 player Juan Londero for his first top 100 win. He must be filled with confidence after that remarkable victory, but is now facing an even bigger challenge in the form of 10th ranked Schwartzman. He will have to play the match of his life for the second time in a row and even that likely won’t be enough.
Diego Schwartzman should breeze through this match, likely in straight sets. The Frenchman has had a nice run through the Qualifying and then a great win in the First Round but his run will end here. Even at his best he does not have the necessary tools to hit through the Argentinian star and will be heading home. Diego Schwartzman to win in straight sets is the most likely outcome.
