Twentieth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada faces Australian James Duckworth in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday February 9th, 2021 at 9:15pm EST. They have played twice before, splitting the matches one win apiece.
Can Duckworth pull off a stunning upset over the seeded Canadian? Or will Auger-Aliassime advance to the Third Round?
Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada has long been considered a future top 5 player on the ATP Tour. Currently ranked 21, he has been as high as #17 before and is incredibly still only 20 years old. He has already had some top 10 wins in his young career and is very consistent at tournaments, but is still awaiting his breakthrough first ATP title win. He has a huge all around offensive game with a big serve, dominating opponents from the baseline. However, he can be very erratic at times and struggles to keep his focus, as evidenced by his shocking loss to Dan Evans in the Final in Melbourne yesterday. He regrouped from that loss well to dominate German player Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straight sets in the First Round, impressing with his big serve and low unforced error count. He seems primed for a deep run here in Australia.
Australian James Duckworth is 29 years of age and has been on the ATP tour for 10 years. Splitting his time between the ATP and Challenger Tours, he is currently ranked 105 in the world, but has been as high as #71. He is a prototypical hardworking Australian player with a very solid baseline game. He impressed in his First Round victory over Damir Dzumhr of Bosnia, winning in straight sets. He seems up for the challenge against the young star but knows he is up against it.
FAA is a very talented player and I do not see him having too much trouble here. While I think Duckworth is a very solid player, the young Canada should overpower him with relative ease. Once he keeps his unforced error count low and serves well this match should be over relatively quickly. Felix Auger-Aliassime to win.
