Maria Sakkari looks to bounce back after a tough loss in the semifinals of the 2021 WTA Grampians Trophy on Sunday against Anett Kontaveit as she meets Kristina Mladenovic in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open on Tuesday, February 9th 2021. Will Sakkari bounce back, or will Mladenovic cause a shocking upset?
Kristina Mladenovic has been struggling with her singles game for a few years now, not being able to get anywhere near the form which we saw from her in 2018 and 2019. Mladenovic has now become more of a doubles player as she is able to actually do what she is good at in that format of the game, however, in the singles she is just not what she used to be anymore. We saw her struggles last week in the first round of the WTA Yarra Valley Classic, losing in straight sets in the first round to Jessica Pegula 6-4/6-1. Will Mladenovic be able to bounce back here, or will she focus on her doubles matches here?
Maria Sakkari was the favourite going into the semifinal match on Sunday at the WTA Grampians Trophy against Anett Kontaveit, but the Greek star lost from a set up to lose in a match tiebreak 11-9. Sakkari, however, should not be dissapointed in her game as she has been playing some exceptional tennis over the last 6 months, and if she continues to play like this, she is definitely going to be one of the toughest and best players on the WTA Tour in 2021.
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Maria Sakkari leading the head to head 1-0. If this was 2/3 years ago, I would definitely have picked Kristina Mladenovic to win. However, nowadays, the opposite is the case. Maria Sakkari is in incredible form and she is definitely going to break into the top 10 this year. Mladenovic, on the other hand, is struggling with form and she will need to find a superb performance if she is going to get anything out of this match. Maria Sakkari will be able to take this match in her hands.
