Tenth seeded Serena Williams of the United States faces unseeded Nina Stojanovic of Serbia in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday February 9th, 2021 at a time yet to be announced. They have never played each other on the WTA Tour. Can the unseeded Serbian upset perhaps the greatest player of all time?
Serena Williams is possibly the greatest female player of all time and needs no introduction. Currently ranked #10 in the world, she is a former world number one and is in search of a record 24th Grand Slam Title. She has not been at her best in recent years as her fitness and form slowly deteriorates but she is still among the best women in the world and is a serious contender for the title here. A huge server, she uses this along with her penetrating groundstrokes to dominate opponents from the baseline. She was outstanding in her straight sets demolition of Laura Siegemund in the First Round, only losing two games in the process. She will be hoping to breeze through these early matches as quickly as possible to conserve her energy for the second week here in Australia.
Nina Stojanovic will not be a recognizable name to casual tennis fans. Currently ranked #99, she has been as high as #81 in the past. She was impressive in her win over Irina-Camelia Begu in her opening match, defeating a higher ranked opponent for her first Grand Slam victory. She had a relatively low first serve percentage, something she must improve upon if she is to make this even remotely a contest. Serena is going to pounce on every ball she can, so she will likely be on the back foot from the very start. As she is playing a much better opponent, she can play with nothing to lose and swing freely. However, if she plays the best match of her life it is not likely that she will cause her opponent any issues whatsoever.
Serena Williams will breeze through this match in straight sets. She simply has way too much power and accuracy for Stojanovic, who will be struggling to even get a few games. Serena is in relentless pursuit of the Grand Slam record and seems locked in here. Serena Williams to win in straight sets.
