Sixth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany takes on Qualifier Maxime Cressy in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday February 9th, 2021 at a time yet to be announced. The pair have never met before in their careers.
Can the young Frenchman stun the German superstar and advance to the Third Round at a Major for the first time in his career?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #7 and has truly announced himself as one of the top players in the world after his breakthrough 2020 season. After a solid ATP Cup campaign with Germany where he had very close losses against Djokovic and Medvedev that he should have won, all signs are pointing towards an assault on the title here in Melbourne. However he did not get off to the best start, losing the first set to unseeded American Marcos Giron. He struggled for half of the match before eventually turning it on to win the match. He knows he will have to be much improved if he wants to contend, especially with his serve which has been very erratic thus far.
Maxime Cressy is currently ranked #172 and impressively qualified for this year’s event. He is a very unique player, with a booming first serve. He very often serves two first serves and rushes the net on almost every point, so he can be quite unsettling to play. He was impressive in his First Round win over Taro Daniel, a quite accomplished player, in straight sets. While he will be confident after that victory he will know that he will have to be much better to trouble the German star. He enters as a massive underdog but can take some comfort in the fact that Zverev is not at 100% and was just troubled by a fellow unseeded player.
While Zverev is clearly not at his best he should have no trouble here. He tends to get rattled easily so may struggle initially with the unique game that Cressy will surely play. However, he should figure it out quite quickly and should not have much trouble getting the win here. It would be a major surprise if there was any other result than a straight sets victory. Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets.
