Eleventh seeded Dennis Shapovalov of Canada faces Australian Qualifier Bernard Tomic in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday February 10th, 2021 at 1:00am EST.
This will be the first meeting between the two players. Can Tomic produce the huge upset?
Dennis Shapovalov is a rising star of the ATP Tour and is currently ranked 12. He looks in good form with his big serve and huge groundstrokes. As always, if he can keep his focus then he will be a handful and is touted by many to be a top 5 player sooner than later. He will no doubt be a bit fatigued after his tremendous five set win over Jannik Sinner in the First Round. He played some incredible tennis and rebounded well after losing focus and arguing with the umpire after the fourth set. He is in good form and will be a handful throughout this tournament.
Bernard Tomic has long been considered an enigma on the ATP Tour. Blessed with tons of talent, he is in the news more often for his poor attitude and lack of effort than his on-court achievements. Once ranked as high as #17, winning 4 ATP tournaments and touted as a future star, he has totally fallen off the radar and is now seeking to get his career back on track after a string of poor results, fines and sanctions. Still a very talented and dangerous player, he possesses a big serve and effortless groundstrokes. His main strength is always how he seemingly reads the game very well. He is in the Second Round here as his First Round opponent Yuichi Sugita retired in the third set due to injury. He will be very happy to be back in the Second Round of a Grand Slam again but knows that he is a huge underdog and will have to be at his very best to make this even slightly competitive.
This match will have only one outcome, and that is a straight sets win for Denis Shapovalov. He may be a bit fatigued but it would be a huge shock if he lost here. Tomic was once a very talented player but at this stage in his career doesn’t have the ability to trouble a player of Shapovalov’s caliber. Denis Shapovalov to win.
