Eighteenth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria faces Australian Wild Card entrant Alex Bolt in the Second Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday February 9th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, can Bolt cause the stunning upset or will Dimitrov cruise into the Third Round?
Grigor Dimitrov is currently ranked 19 and has had resurgence over the past year. After struggling for form and fitness for a while, he has worked his way back and is now seemingly close to his best. Once ranked as high as #3, he has been a Semi-Finalist here in Melbourne before and will be looking for a deep run here. He had a decent warm-up event at the Murray River Open, reaching the Quarter-Finals before losing to Frenchman Corentin Moutet in straight sets. He knows he will have to do better if he is to make the second week here but he has a lot of experience to fall back on. He was outstanding in his straight sets win over Marin Cilic in the First Round which was a very good result in a particularly tricky match. He returned serve very well and was aggressive from start to finish.
Alex Bolt received a Wild Card into the Main Draw of this event, and took full advantage of the opportunity by defeating Norbert Gombos of Serbia in four sets. He is currently ranked #166 and will be keen to break into the world top 100 for the first time with an impressive showing here. He is a solid all around player that is very hardworking and quick, but lacks a true weapon which is usually needed to compete with the top players like Dimitrov. He knows that he is the underdog but seems to be in good form, and will play with nothing to lose which can make him a potentially tricky opponent for the Bulgarian.
While Alex Bolt did well to win his First Round match, his run at the tournament stops here. Grigor Dimitrov is a highly experienced player that has been in the Semi-Finals here before. He is in very good form at the moment and it is very unlikely that he will drop his guard and allow the Australian any openings. Grigor Dimitrov to win.
