Andrey Rublev (7) meets Thiago Monteiro in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open on Thursday, February 11th 2021.
Will Thiago Monteiro be able to cause what would be the most shocking upset of the tournament so far, or will the complete domination of Andrey Rublev on the ATP Tour continue here?
Thiago Monteiro came through a quite easy first set match against Andrej Martin, beating the Serbian in straight sets 7-6/6-1/6-2. Monteiro is a very powerful player, and he has been playing some great tennis over the last few weeks, therefore, his confidence will definitely be sky high at the moment. However, Thiago Monteiro will still be very wary of his next match against a player who will hurt him in every aspect of his game if he does not bring his best on every single point. Will Monteiro be able to up his level drastically to potentially cause the upset here?
Andrey Rublev has been in superb form for over a year now, and he has proved to us that he is here to stay for the long run. Andrey Rublev went undefeated at the 2021 ATP Cup last week, and played a pivotal role in Team Russia winning the competition. Rublev will want to show everyone that he is not only a mid level tournament player, but that he can compete on the biggest stages and perhaps even challenge for the title here in Australia. Andrey Rublev has a massive serve, a superb forehand, great movement, and a fighter mentality.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is going to be a complete Andrey Rublev domination in my opinion. Thiago Monteiro is a very solid player, and has had some strong results under his belt over the last few weeks, however, he is nowhere near the level he needs to be at if he is to get anything out of this match against Rublev. Andrey Rublev is one of the best players in the world at the moment, and he will want to ensure he continues to perform at this high level. Andrey Rublev to win in straight sets.
