Belinda Bencic meets Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open on Thursday, February 9th 2021.
Who out of these two fighters on the court is going to come through what is certainly going to be a very tight, exciting, and exhilarating encounter in the second round?
Belinda Bencic came through a tight 3 set encounter in the first round against Lauren Davis, beating the American 6-3/4-6/6-1. You could tell that Belinda had not played tennis in a while and she did have some rust in those first two sets. However, the Swiss star was able to put her foot down in the important moments and get the job done against a very energetic opponent. Bencic will now feel better coming into this second round match as she will have worn off some of that rust, but she will have to be wary against a very tough and in form opponent in Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, on the other hand, has a very straight forward first round victory over a tough player in Barbora Strycova, beating the Czech in straight sets 6-2/6-2. Kuznetsova is a fighter on the court, and she showed us in that match that she is determined to put in the effort from the first to the last point without giving way for her opponents to get anywhere. Kuznetsova did play a tough opponent, but one who was towards the end of her career. She will now have to ensure her game improves as she meets Belinda Bencic who is a future star of tennis.
The head to head stands very tight between these to players as they enter their 5th meeting, with all four previous encounters being split evenly 2-2. This gives us the indication that this is going to be a very tight match, especially as 3 out of their 4 previous encounters went to three sets. I expect a 3 set match here, but one which the younger, more energetic, and higher profile player in Belinda Bencic should come through to book her spot in the third round of the Australian Open.
