Fourteenth seed and 2020 Finalist Garbine Muguruza of Spain faces unseeded Kazakh Zarina Diyas in the Third Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday February 11th, 2021 at approximately 9:30pm EST. They have played once before with the Spaniard winning on that occasion, on a hard court. Can Diyas cause the upset and advance to the Round of 16?
Garbine Muguruza is currently ranked #14 and is a former world number one. She was a finalist here last year and is considered a contender for the title here in Melbourne. She has been in phenomenal form so far in 2021, reaching the Final last week in the Yarra Valley Open where she lost to Ashleigh Barty and has raced to the Third Round here without breaking much of a sweat. She defeated Margarita Gasparyan and Ludmilla Samsonova for the loss of 4 games in each match, controlling the match from the baseline. She has also been impressive with her serve, and area that can let her down at times. If she can serve well all tournament, she shold certainly be considered one of the top favorites here.
Zarina Diyas is currently ranked #83 but has been as high as #31 in the past. She has had a very poor lead up to this competition, losing in the First Round of 5 of the 6 tournaments she played at the end of the year, and then losing her opening match in Dubai this year. Despite this, she defeated two very solid opponents in Bernarda Pera and Tamara Zidansek to reach the Third Round here, and finally seems to be hitting some form. She has a very aggressive baseline style and will be looking to keep Muguruza pegged back, but that is no easy feat. She enters this match as the huge underdog and it remains to be seen if she is capable of making this interesting.
There will only be one outcome here, and that is a win for Garbine Muguruza. Simply put, she is in much better form and is a much better player than her opponent. They play similar styles but Muguruza is better in every single facet of the game. Garbine Muguruza to win in straight sets.
