Fifteenth seed Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain faces Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the Third Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to take place on Thursday February 11th, 2021 at 10:45pm EST. They have played seven times over their careers with Dimitrov leading the head to head by four wins to three. Can Carreno-Busta win and even the series?
Pablo Carreno-Busta is currently ranked #16 and has been ranked as high as #10 before. He is one of the most consistent performers on the ATP Tour and is usually a sure bet to reach the second week at the Majors. He is an extremely consistent baseline player with excellent movement. He has added some offensive firepower to his game in recent years and will be hard to beat here. He has reached the Third Round by beating Kei Nishikori in straight sets in the First Round, and then overcoming Jiri Vesely in the Second Round in four tough sets. He enters this match as the slight favorite but knows he is in for a huge battle.
Grigor Dimitrov is currently ranked 19 and has had resurgence over the past year. After struggling for form and fitness for a while, he has worked his way back and is now seemingly close to his best. Once ranked as high as #3, he has been a Semi-Finalist here in Melbourne before and will be looking for a deep run here. He is yet to lose a set here in Melbourne, overcoming a tricky First Round encounter with Marin Cilic and then a routine win over Australian Alex Bolt. He has solid penetrating groundstrokes and has been particularly impressive with his serve thus far. He knows that he will have to be a bit more aggressive than normal to overcome the consistency speed of PCB. It certainly will be a difficult match but he will be confident knowing that PCB has never beaten him on hard courts.
I expect this to be an extremely close match. Both players have been impressive so far, and are hugely experienced. It might go down to the wire but I think that Carreno-Busta just has a little more quality at this stage in their careers and should be able to eventually wear Dimitrov down. Pablo Carreno-Busta to win and both players to win a set.
