Tenth seeded American Serena Williams will face unseeded Anastasia Potapova in the Third Round of the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. The match is scheduled to be played on Thursday February 11th, 2021 at 10:00pm EST. They have played once before with Serena winning on that occasion. Will she extend that streak and advance to the Round of 16, or will her opponent cause the stunning upset?
Serena Williams is widely considered the greatest female player of all time and has won seven titles here at Melbourne Park. While advancing in age and slowing down, she is still one of the top players in the world and considered one of the favorites to win the title. As everyone knows, she is chasing a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title and will be hugely focused on making that happen. She has been in dominant form so far, dropping only five games in total over her wins over Laura Siegemund and Nina Stojanovic. Most importantly, she has won those matches quickly, preserving her energy. If she is in this type of form all tournament she will be in with a great shot of the title.
Anastasia Potapova is only 19 years old but is considered a future star on the WTA Tour. Currently ranked #101, she has had some injury issues recently but has been as high as #64 in the past. She upset Alison Riske in the First Round before defeating Timea Babos in the second. She is a very talented player with a very strong all-court game but it is unlikely that she will have enough power to seriously trouble Serena here. She enters this match as the huge underdog and will be hoping to improve on her performance the last time they played, when Serena defeated her 6-0, 6-3.
This match has only one outcome, and that will be a straight sets win for Serena Williams. The American legend seems fitter than she has been recently and is striking the ball extremely well. She seems to be enjoying her tennis again and is fully focused on winning the title here, a frightening prospect for the rest of the field. Serena Williams to win in straight sets.
