Sofia Kenin meets Kaia Kanepi in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open on Thursday, February 11th 2021.
Will the 2020 Australian Open Champion be able to book her spot in the third round here, or will she face a shocking upset from a very tough Kaia Kanepi?
Kaia Kanepi put on a very solid performance in her first round match, beating Anastasia Sevastova in straight sets 6-3/6-1. Kanepi is not very well known/seen on the WTA Tour anymore, compared to a few years ago where she was playing much better, but it is great to see her back on court playing with some confidence. Kanepi will have to make sure she rides that confidence and utilizes all the momentum she built up in that match as she now meets one of the toughest players in the WTA Tour, the 2020 Australian Open Champion, Sofia Kenin.
Sofia Kenin came through a tight 2 set victory over Maddison Inglis 7-5/6-4. Sofia Kenin has not been as dominating as she would have liked to be in the last week, but that is understandable due to the lack of play time she has had in the last 3/4 months. Kenin will want to fight through her matches in the first few rounds here to find her footing and then get back to dominating on the biggest stages of the WTA Tour. Kenin meets a tough opponent, when playing her best, in Kaia Kanepi, and she will have to ensure she does not give up anything easily here.
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Kaia Kanepi leading the head to head 1-0. They last met in 2018 when they were both trying to qualify for the Italian Masters, and Kanepi came through in 3 sets 2-6/6-2/6-2. A lot has changed since then, Kanepi's game has gone down in quality, whilst Sofia Kenin's game has become incredibly strong, allowing her to make 2 Grand Slam Finals in 2020, and winning one of them. I expect a tight match of course as Kenin is still trying to find her footing this year, but one which Kenin should still be able to come through.
