Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) meets Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open on Thursday, February 11th 2021.
Will Stefanos dominate as he did in his first round match against Gilles Simon, or will we see a shocking upset from the local wild card in Thanasi Kokkinakis?
Thanasi Kokkinakis absolutely destroyed Soonwoo Kwon in the first round, beating the South Korean in straight sets 6-4/6-1/6-1. If you would have asked me before that match who I believe would win, Kwon would have been the simple answer as he has been in much better form recently. However, Kokkinakis came out to play on Tuesday, and put on an incredible performance as the underdog. The crowd were loving his game and he will definitely want to recreate that feeling. Kokkinakis will be very wary, however, as he meets a player who is in incredible form at the moment in Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas cruised through his first round match against Gilles Simon, beating the Frenchman in straight sets 6-1/6-2/6-1. Tsitsipas was on top of his game from start to finish and he did not give up anything easily to the French veteran. Tsitsipas was very shocked himself with the ease of his win, and he will definitely not expect this in all matches as he would otherwise take things too lightly. Tsitsipas looks like a real title contender this year, and I am sure that this could be the year he wins his maiden Grand Slam title if he continues to play similar tennis to this.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is going to be a domination by the young Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Thanasi played great in his first match here, but he has nowhere near the level required to compete with a top 10 player. Tsitsipas has won his last 3 matches against tough opponents and he will be very confident coming into this match that he can get the job done quickly in straight sets and book his spot in the third round of the tournament in his quest to win his maiden Grand Slam.
