Anett Kontaveit (21) meets Shelby Rogers in the third round of the 2021 Australian Open on Saturday, February 13th 2021.
Will we see another trilling performance by Anett Kontaveit here in Australia, or will Shelby Rogers be able to cause the upset here in the third round on Saturday?
Shelby Rogers came through a quite easy second round match, beating the Serbian qualifier, Olga Danilovic, in straight sets 6-2/6-3. This match was not really won by Shelby Rogers, but rather handed to her by a very tired Olga Danilovic who was not playing her best tennis, but rather just hitting the ball back into court and allowing herself to be dominated. Shelby Rogers will know she cannot expect these sorts of matches every time she steps onto the court, and she will have to drastically improve her level, especially in this third round match against a very tough Anett Kontaveit.
Anett Kontaveit came through a very tight 3-set encounter against Heather Watson in the second round, beating the British star 6-7/6-4/6-2. Kontaveit should've really won that first set, and she was able to maintain her composure after she lost it, and eventually won the match. Kontaveit is a fighter on the WTA Tour and she will give you everything from the first to the last point, no matter whether she is 40-0 up or 0-40 down. Kontaveit will know that if she plays her best tennis, she can definitely cause some issues to some of the best players in the world, but will she be able to do this after such a tough win?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Anett Kontaveit leading the head to head 1-0. They last met in the first round of Wimbledon in 2019, where Kontaveit won in 3 sets 6-0/3-6/6-4. Both these players have been playing very well over the last year or so and it is definitely going to create a tight encounter here in the third round, but the player who has been in better form recently, has been Anett Kontaveit. I would expect a 3 setter here, but one which the more in form Kontaveit should win.
