Kristina Mladenovic meets Jessica Pegula in the third round of the 2021 Australian Open on Saturday, February 13th 2021.
Will we continue seeing the resurgence of the frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, or will Jessica Pegula be able to ruffle the big swinging Mladenovic's game and cause the upset here in the third round?
Jessica Pegula absolutely destroyed the wild card Samantha Stosur in the second round, only losing one game in her straight sets victory 6-0/6-1. Pegula is a very tough player to beat on her day, and she will be filled with confidence after that dominant display in the second round. However, Jessica Pegula knows she is going to have to be able to increase her level even further in the third round as she meets a player who has much more experience than her, has played on bigger stages than her, and is on a resurgence over the last week or so, Kristina Mladenovic.
Kristina Mladenovic has been playing some superb tennis here at the 2021 Australian Open, showing us some of her best tennis which we had not seen in a while. Mladenovic, when on top of her game, is one of the best players in the world and she can definitely get back to her peak if she focuses a lot on improving her singles game rather than her doubles in 2021. Mladenovic has been playing well, but she knows she has to continue playing at this level if she wants to find the recognition amongst players that she used to be a part of, the tennis elite.
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Jessica Pegula leading the head to head 1-0. They last met at the end of January in the first round of the WTA Yarra Valley Classic, where Pegula won in straight sets 6-4/6-1. Pegula will want to continue playing with the momentum she has, but I think that Kristina Mladenovic is going to get revenge here for her loss recently. Mladenovic has picked up her game and she has a lot of momentum behind her coming into this match. I think she gets the job done here and ties the head to head 1-1. Kristina Mladenovic to win.
