A huge battle awaits in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Australian Open in Melbourne. Third seeded Naomi Osaka of Japan will face fourteenth seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in a match worthy of a Final. The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday February 13th, 2021 at 8:00pm EST. Surprisingly, they have never faced each other before. Who will get the first win and advance to the Quarter-Final?
Former champion Naomi Osaka is in fantastic form so far here in Melbourne and is considered the favorite for the title. She has dominated all three of her opponents in straight sets and has looked unstoppable. Osaka has an ultra-attacking baseline game, taking the ball early and dominating her opponents with her power. When she is striking the ball like this she is very hard to beat and will be extremely confident heading into this match. She is the clear favorite but will know the quality of her opponent and is unlikely to underestimate her. If she can keep her unforced error count down she will have a very strong chance here. She was particularly impressive in her win over Jabeur, an opponent that was expected to cause her a big of trouble but she played some incredible tennis, hitting winners seemingly at will.
Garbine Muguruza is currently ranked #14 and is a former world number one. She was a finalist here last year and is considered a contender for the title here in Melbourne. She has been in phenomenal form so far in 2021, reaching the Final last week in the Yarra Valley Open where she lost to Ashleigh Barty and has advanced to the Round of 16 here with relative ease. She was in outstanding form in her Third Round win against Zarina Diyas, serving very well and rushing to victory in only 56 minutes. While she enters this match as the slight underdog, in this form she will be very difficult to beat.
This has the potential to be a very interesting match between two Grand Slam Champions and former world number ones. They are both in incredible form and it is sure to be an exciting match. That being said, Osaka has the higher upside of the two and I expect her to win this match. Three sets is likely but Osaka should come through in the end.
