Elise Mertens (18) meets Karolina Muchova (25) in the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open on Monday, February 15th 2021.
Will Elise Mertens continue to cruise through her matches here at the Australian Open, or will Karolina Muchova be able to cause another upset here in the fourth round?
Karolina Muchova was able to oust her fellow Czech player, Karolina Pliskova, who was the no.6 seed, in straight sets on Saturday, 7-5/7-5. Muchova was able to keep the match very tight and get the job done on her returning game when it mattered most. Muchova was not expected to be here, and she is definitely riding on a free ticket and will be feeling free when she is playing on the court. Muchova will now face one of the most in form opponents at the moment in Elise Mertens. Will she be able to cause another upset in this fourth round matchup?
Elise Mertens is in incredible form at the moment, not having lost a match since the start of the month, and winning the WTA Gippsland Trophy along the way. Mertens also beat a very tough opponent in Belinda Bencic in the third round, beating the no.11 seed in straight sets 6-2/6-1. Mertens is just in her zone at the moment, and it is great to see her succeeding on the Single's tour as we mostly see her play strongly in the Double's arena. Mertens will want to come out here and get the job done easily here, but will she be able to do it against such a tough opponent?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Elise Mertens leading the head to head 1-0. They met towards the end of last year, at the Ostrava Open, where Elise Mertens won in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Both players are in great form at the moment, and they have both beaten very tough opponents, but at the end of the day one player stands out more. Elise Mertens has been incredible here in Australia, and she is extremely determined to get her singles career on the map this year. I think Mertens gets this done on Monday.
