Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) meets Matteo Berrettini (9) in the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open on Monday, February 15th 2021.
Will we see Stefanos Tsitsipas dominate yet another match here at the Australian Open, or will the big swinging Matteo Berrettini be able to continue playing with his incredible momentum to book his spot in the quarterfinals?
Matteo Berrettini beat a very solid Karen Khachanov in the third round, beating the Russian in straight sets 7-6/7-6/7-6. Matteo Berrettini has been in great form since coming here to Australia, beating some big name players along the way. Berrettini has been able to find the consistency which he was lacking a bit in 2020, which prevented him from maintaining his spot in the Nitto ATP Finals at the end of 2020. Berrettini will want to make the quarterfinals here as he is playing extremely well, but will he be able to beat a very strong Stefanos Tsitsipas?
Stefanos Tsitsipas absolutely destroyed Mikael Ymer in the third round on Saturday, beating his friend in straight sets 6-4/6-1/6-1. Tsitsipas looked great in that match, much better than he did in his second round match against Thanasi Kokkinakis. Tsitsipas has said that this needs to be the year of the young guys on the ATP Tour making their inroads against the Big 3 in the biggest tournaments. Will Tsitsipas be able to continue playing with this great form and book his spot in the quarterfinals in his quest to win his maiden grand slam title?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 1-0. The last time they met was at the 2019 Australian Open in the first round, where Tsitsipas won in 4 sets 6-7/6-4/6-3/7-6. Since then, both players have been continuously improving and establishing themselves as top 10 players on the ATP Tour. When choosing who would win this match, it definitely has to come down to big matches throughout their career. Stefanos Tsitsipas has played on bigger stages than Berrettini, and I think that this will give him the slight edge in what is going to be a very tight match. I expect a 5-setter, but one which Tsitsipas should win.
