Daniil Medvedev (4) meets Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) in the semi finals of the 2021 Australian Open on Friday, February 19th 2021.
Will Tsitsipas have much left after such a tight and incredible 5-set comeback against the heavy favourite Rafael Nadal on Wednesday night, or will Daniil Medvedev continue to cruise through here?
Stefanos Tsitsipas proved the whole world wrong on Wednesday, becoming the 2nd man to ever beat Rafael Nadal from 2-0 down in a Grand Slam match. Tsitsipas looked down and out throughout the entire first 3 sets, but he was able to maintain his composure in the tiebreak to steal one set. After this, the conditions of playing at night and in cooler conditions did not help Rafael Nadal get the sort of topspin and speed on the ball he was getting in those first 3 sets. Tsitsipas was able to push Nadal to the edge, and eventually get his way, wining in 5 sets 3-6/2-6/7-6/6-4/7-5.
Daniil Medvedev absolutely cruised through his quarter final match, beating his fellow Russian and close friend, Andrey Rublev, in straight sets 7-5/6-3/6-2. Medvedev was incredible in that match and he did not ever give up anything easily. Beating Rublev, who was also in incredible form, was never going to be an easy task, but Medvedev made it look like a piece of cake. Medvedev is not on an 18-match winning streak, and he will be very confident in his ability to make it 19 if he plays the same way he played in the quarterfinals.
This is going to be the 7th meeting between both players, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 5-1. I expect this to be an incredible encounter, and if both players were full of energy, a match that could go either way. However, I believe that Medvedev has had a lot less time on court than Stefanos, is not coming off one of the most physical 5-set matches ever in the last few years, and has cruised through all his matches here. Tsitsipas will have his chances, but he will be too tired both physically and mentally to overcome the unorthodox play of Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev to reach the Australian Open Final.
