Jaume Munar meets Nicolas Jarry (WC) in the first round of the 2021 Cordoba Open on Monday, February 22nd 2021.
Will we see the Jaume Munar we are used to seeing compete on these clay courts, or will Nicolas Jarry have a resurgence of his playing style which saw him reach some finals in 2018, playing against some of the best like Alexander Zverev?
Nicolas Jarry has had a bit of a fall from grace in the last couple of years as he has not competed much in these smaller tournaments. Jarry is great on clay courts, and his ability to both serve big, and move fast around the court, allow him to shock his opponents who might think of him more of a hard-courter. Jarry has had his issues with injuries of course, but I am sure that if he is fully fit, we can see him compete for titles in these smaller ATP tournaments this year.
Jaume Munar has gone under the radar a bit recently due to the lack of clay court tournaments on the main ATP Tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, he has been getting some solid minutes under his belt in clay court tournaments on the Challenger Tour. Munar is a talent which came out of the Rafael Nadal Academy, and his playing style is definitely most suited for clay courts. Munar will want to get back to the levels which saw him push the likes of Dominic Thiem to his limit on clay.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is definitely going to be a tight one coming into this. Jaume Munar is still sitting at 101st in the world, whilst Nicolas Jarry does not even have a ranking at the moment due to the fact he has not played in a couple years. If this was 2018, I would've chosen Jarry to win, however, the lack of play on his side, and the strong amount of preparation on the side of Jaume Munar only gives me confidence in one result. Jaume Munar to win.
