Day two of the ATP 250 Event in Singapore is upon us. Below are some previews of the matches on Tuesday February 23rd, 2021.
Radu Albot vs John-Patrick Smith - Sixth seeded Radu Albot of Moldova faces Australian John-Patrick Smith in a First Round clash. This will be the first meeting between the two players and it is seemingly a mismatch on paper with Albot ranked #76 and Smith #306. Smith qualified for this event and while he has played well thus far I don't expect him to be much of a threat to the Moldovan. Albot to win in straight sets, continuing his resurgence after a fine Australian Open.
Pick - Radu Albot to win
Alexei Popyrin vs Adrian Andreev - Australian Alexei Popyrin faces Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria in the Round of 16 after both players clinched impressive wins in the opening round. Popyrin served very well in a win over Chris Eubanks in two tiebreakers while Andreev scored the upset, defeating #7 seed Lloyd Harris in three sets. Andreev is ranked outside the top 500 and will be delighted to be in the second round. I expect this to be a tough match with Popyrin edging the talented youngster in three sets.
Pick - Alexei Popyrin to win
Marin Cilic vs Taro Daniel - The pick of the Round of 16 matches, third seed Marin Cilic of Croatia faces Japanese Taro Daniel in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. Both players have struggled for form lately and will be hoping for a good run here in Singapore. Cilic is a former top 5 player and Grand Slam player and enters this match as the favorite. As is usually the case, a lot depends on his serve as that is his primary weapon. Daniel is a good returner and quick mover so he has the potential to make life difficult for the Croatian. I expect this to be a close match with Cilic winning in two tight sets, at least one tiebreaker.
Pick - Marin Cilic to win.
Yoshihito Nishioka vs Maxime Cressy - This is a match between two flashy players, 5th seeded Nishioka of Japan and Maxime Cressy of France. Cressy is well known for his unique serve and volley style and Nishioka is a very quick and solid baseline player. Expect this one to be close but the Japanese player to get the win.
Pick - Yoshihito Nishioka to win
