Benoit Paire (2) meets Nicolas Jarry (WC) in the second round of the 2021 Cordoba Open on Wednesday, February 24th 2021.
Will Nicolas Jarry be able to get yet another great performance under his belt to get his career back on track, or will Benoit Paire finally find form after having form and injury issues in Australia a few weeks ago?
Nicolas Jarry is back and he definitely did not disappoint in his first match back in over a year, beating the favourite Jaume Munar in 3 sets to book his spot in the second round. Nicolas Jarry lost the first set 5-7, but showed incredible composure not to give up after such a long break and fought back to win the next two sets 7-6/6-4. Jarry is a player which not many people would expect to be solid on clay courts, but when he is physically fit, he can compete with some of the best in the game. Jarry will have to put on an incredible performance here if he is to beat Benoit Paire, but if there is a man to do it, it will be Nicolas.
Benoit Paire has struggled this year, on hard courts, as he did not find his best form at the 2021 ATP Cup, which was mainly due to his tennis elbow injury, which saw him lose in straight sets to Fabio Fognini, and then retire early in his match against Dominic Thiem. Paire did not compete well at the Australian Open either and he definitely needs to get some solid minutes under his belt if he is to get anywhere this year. Can he get this done here in Cordoba?
This is going to be the fourth meeting between both players, with Benoit Paire leading the head to head 3-0. Their encounters have all been close battles, but Paire's unorthodox and flamboyant playing style does give Jarry some issues. I think if Benoit Paire is feeling fit physically, he can get the job done here again as Jarry does not have the game to beat him just yet so early in his comeback. Jarry will be tired after such a tough match in the first round after more than a year away from the game, and I am sure Benoit Paire will use that to his advantage. Benoit Paire to win.
