Diego Schwartzman (1) meets Marco Cecchinato in the second round of the 2021 Cordoba Open on Wednesday, February 24th 2021.
Will we see the Marco Cecchinato of old which saw him reach the 2018 Roland Garros semi-final, or will Diego Schwartzman continue to improve and impress on the ATP Tour as he did in 2020?
Marco Cecchinato came through a tough opponent in the first round, beating Hugo Dellien in 3 sets. Dellien is a very tough opponent, especially on clay as he is a great mover around the court, however, Marco Cecchinato was great from the get go in his match. Marco won in 3 sets 6-2/4-6/6-1 to book his spot in the second round. The Italian ia great on clay, but he is still nowhere near the level which saw him beat the likes of Novak Djokovic at Roland Garros to reach the semifinals, and he will have to pull off an amazing performance here if he is to make the quarter finals.
Diego Schwartzman looks to begin his 2021 clay court season after he had the best season of his career in 2020, which saw him reach the later stages of many tournaments, including the Rome Masters Final on clay against Novak Djokovic. Diego is one of the best clay courters out there, and I am sure he wants to get himself in a strong position from the get go this year to ensure he once again qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals. Will Diego come out a bit rusty in his first match on clay of the year, or will he be ready to go from the start?
This is going to be the fourth match between both players, with Diego Schwartzman leading the head to head 2-1. They played all their matches in 2019 where Diego won their only hard court encounter, and they split the clay court matches. Back then, Marco was a much hotter commodity in the tennis world, and since then, he has gone downhill in his career trajectory. It is hard for me to see Cecchinato beating Diego who is now a top 10 player and has continued to improve his game to compete with the best in the world. Diego Schwartzman to win.
