Thiago Monteiro (7) meets Juan Manuel Cerundolo (Q) in the quarter finals of the 2021 Cordoba Open on Friday, February 26th 2021.
Will Juan Manuel Cerundolo be able to cause yet another upset here and make the semifinals of his home tournament, or will Thiago Monteiro dominate as he has in both his matches here in Cordoba?
Juan Manuel Cerundolo was never expected to be a player in the quarterfinals here, as he met both Thiago Seyboth Wild, and Miomir Kecmanovic, two players higher ranked and more experienced than him. The most impressive win was against Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round, coming back from a set down to win in 3 sets against Kecmanovic, who was the heavy favourite, winning 6-7/7-5/6-2. Cerundolo has now made his first ATP quarter final and he will be very happy, but will he be able to maintain the level against another tough opponent in Thiago Monteiro?
Thiago Monteiro has eased his way through all of his matches here, not losing a set yet, beating Joao Menezes 6-3//6-3 in the first round, and beating Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3/6-4 in the second round to book his quarterfinal spot. Thiago Monteiro is a very powerful player, and he has incredible movement around the court, which helps him succeed in these ATP 250 clay court tournaments. Thiago knows that if he plays his best here, he can definitely make the semifinals, and even the final, and be on his way to grabbing his first title of the season in Cordoba.
This is going to be the first meeting between both players, and it is going to be a very interesting one here in Cordoba. Juan Manuel Cerundolo is only 19 years old and this is his first ATP tournament, whilst Thiago Monteiro has a lot more experience on the tour. I expect Cerundolo to be high in confidence coming into this match, but he will have to realise that if he is to win here, he will have to be even more solid in this tougher match. I think Thiago Monteiro will use his experience to gain the edge here, and book his spot in the semifinals.
