Second seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland faces teenage prodigy Cori "Coco" Gauff of the United States in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 WTA Adelaide International. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday February 26th, 2021 at 4:00am EST. This will be the first time the pair have met on the WTA Tour. Who will win and advance to their first final of the year?
Belinda Bencic is currently ranked #12 but has a career high ranking of #4. She has struggled with form and consistency over the past two years, shockingly having not been in a WTA final for over 15 months! She struggled to string wins together last year and will be happy to have finally found some form here in Adelaide. She is a very aggressive baseliner who likes to dictate play during matches. Bencic has been outstanding this week, with two straight-sets demolitions of Doi and Storm Sanders to reach the Semi-Finals. She enters this match as the favorite but knows that Gauff has been a lot more consistent than she has over the past few months so it will not be easy.
Cori "Coco" Gauff has long been touted as a future star of the WTA Tour and she is fulfilling those heavy expectations that have been placed on her shoulders. Only 16 years of age, she is ranked a career high #47 and is the youngest player in the top 100 of the rankings. Many people consider her to be a future number one and it is hard to disagree with that expectation. Gauff has won five matches here so far in Adelaide, coming through the Qualifying Rounds to reach this point. Astonishingly, she has won four consecutive matches in three sets, three of which she came from being a set down. She has shown remarkable grit here, but fatigue must be a factor at this point. She is an excellent defensive player and moves very well.
This has all the makings of a close encounter and I would not be surprised if it went to three sets. While Gauff is a fierce competitor I am going to give the edge to Bencic here. She finally seems like she is getting back to her best and she has a bit too much firepower for the young American to handle.
