Albert Ramos-Vinolas (5) meets Facundo Bagnis (Q) in the semi finals of the 2021 Cordoba Open on Saturday, February 27th 2021.
Will we see yet another upset here at the 2021 Cordoba Open, or will Albert Ramos-Vinolas steady the ship now and make his way to the Final on Sunday?
Facundo Bagnis came through a very easy quarter final encounter on Friday, beating Jozef Kovalik in straight sets 6-1/6-2. Bagnis' match was the only match of the day on Friday which went the way it was expected to go, with every other match ending in an upset for the favourite. Facundo Bagnis is now stepping into unchartered territory, and he will be filled with both excitement and nerves in my opinion coming into this match. Bagnis will see some light however coming into this match, as he was most likely expecting to meet Diego Schwartzman, but is now meeting Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas shocked us all on Friday, not only beating Diego Schwartzman in 3 sets to book his spot in the semi finals, but he did it coming off a 5-0 head to head losing streak to Schwartzman and he had never won a set against Schwartzman either before Friday. Albert Ramos-Vinolas just did not give Schwartzman anything on Friday, and you could tell that Schwartzman took the match a bit too lightly at the beginning, perhaps letting the grand head to head lead take over his game. Ramos-Vinolas will be looking at himself now, knowing he is the favourite for the title here, but he will have to come through a tough Facundo Bagnis first.
This is going to be the 5th meeting between both players, with Albert Ramos-Vinolas leading the head to head 4-0. They last met last year in the same tournament in the first round, where Albert Ramos-Vinolas won in straight sets 6-4/7-6. Bagnis has never won a set against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and unfortunately for the Argentinian, I do not expect him to win his first one here. Albert Ramos-Vinolas showed us a very high level on Friday which we were not expecting, and I am sure his game will only improve with the confidence he gained. Albert Ramos-Vinolas to win.
