Andrey Rublev (4) meets Andy Murray (WC) in the second round of the 2021 Rotterdam Open on Wednesday, March 3rd 2021.
Will Andrey Rublev continue cruising through his matches as we have seen him do over the last year, or will Andy Murray be able to show us why he is a Grand Slam Champion and former world no.1?
Andy Murray came through an extremely hard fought match in the first round against Robin Haase. Murray won this match coming from a set down and 3-0 down in the third set to win 2-6/7-6/6-3. Murray showed great determination to stay in the match even when many would have thought he was down and out in many occasions. Murray said following his win that he still believes he can compete with the top players in the world, and when he no longer believes he can, he will retire. These sorts of victories are important for Murray as they give him the confidence that he might be down, but not out. Murray now meets a very tough opponent in Rublev. Will he be able to cause the upset?
Andrey Rublev continues to dominate the ATP 500 tournaments, having won his last 16 matches in a row in these tournaments. Rublev is such a tough opponent to beat as he has both the power, the mentality, and the confidence to back his shots, which most players would be afraid to do. Rublev knows he is the dominating player in these size tournaments, and he will not want to let go of his domination. But will he be able to come through a very tough and experienced opponent in Andy Murray in the second round?
This is going to be the second meeting between both players, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 1-0. Unfortunately for Andy Murray, Rublev is just in incredible form at the moment, and he is levels above Murray both physically and mentally on the tennis court. If this was 4/5 years ago, there would be no chance Murray would have lost, but nowadays, the tables have turned. I expect a straight sets win here for Andrey Rublev, booking himself a spot in the quarterfinals here at the 2021 Rotterdam Open.
