Kei Nishikori meets Borna Coric in the quarter finals of the 2021 Rotterdam Open on Friday, March 5th 2021.
Will Kei Nishikori continue to impress here and show a potential resurgence of his game, or will Borna Coric put on another extremely solid performance as he did in the second round?
Kei Nishikori came through an extremely tight match against Alex de Minaur in the second round, beating the young Australian in 3 sets 6-3/2-6/7-5. That victory was definitely good for the Nishikori game as it has given him both more competitive minutes under his belt, and it has increased his confidence that he can compete against the best players in the world still. Nishikori will definitely be physically tired coming into this quarter final, but if there is one man who can perform when people doubt him, it is Kei Nishikori. Can he book his spot in the semi finals?
Borna Coric absolutely dominated his second round match, beating Dusan Lajovic in straight sets 6-3/6-2. Coric came in and put on a great serving performance, and his returning game was as good. Coric is showing signs that he is going to continue rising up the rankings if he plays at this level throughout the year, but we all know that Coric will be looking to improve even more and perform at a high level in much bigger tournaments. Coric had such a promising career when he was younger, and he is still going to aim to achieve that. Can he get one step closer on Friday?
This is going to be the 2nd meeting between both players, with their last encounter taking place 6 years ago at the Tokyo Open where Kei Nishikori won in 3 sets. They haven't played in a while, and this is going to be a very tight and tough battle for both players. If this was many years ago, I would've predicted Nishikori to come through here. However, Nishikori is still not at 100% physically, whilst Borna Coric is closer to his 100% at the moment. Borna Coric to win and book his spot in the semi finals.
