Borna Coric (8) meets Malek Jaziri in the first round of the 2021 Doha Open on Monday, March 8th 2021.
Will Borna Coric continue to perform superbly as we saw him do just last week at the 2021 Rotterdam Open, or will Malek Jaziri be able to cause what would be a shocking upset on Monday in Doha?
Malek Jaziri is towards the latter end of his career, and he does not really play many tournaments on the ATP Tour anymore unless he is handed a wildcard as he was here. Jaziri plays more at the Challenger level nowadays, and he is very well out of form compared to every other player in the tournament this week. I would be shocked if Jaziri gets anything done here in Doha, but in tennis you just never know. Can Jaziri cause what would be an extremely shocking upset against a very in form player in Borna Coric?
Borna Coric has been in great form recently, showing the tennis world that he is back and improving after a couple years battling injuries. Coric reached the semi finals of the 2021 Rotterdam Open last week and put on great performances against the likes of Nishikori and Lajovic. Coric lost to Marton Fucsovics in a very tight match, however, this should not take away from his amazing performances all week. Coric will want to go far in yet another tournament, and he knows he can do just that here in Doha. Will Coric not be fatigued in his first match in order to prevent what would be a shocking upset?
This is going to be the third meeting between both players, with Borna Coric leading the head to head 2-0. They last met over 5 years ago and Coric dominated both their prior encounters. Unfortunately for Jaziri, he is not a player of the level of Coric, and never has been throughout his career. He received the Doha wild card every year as more of a gesture rather than merit, and he will get knocked out in the first round for yet another year. Borna Coric to win in straight sets.
