Top seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia faces Italian fifth seed Jannik Sinner in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Marseille Open ATP event. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday March 12th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. They two players have played once before, with Medvedev winning on that occasion.
This is sure to be an exciting clash between two of the exciting players on the ATP Tour. Will the new world #2 Daniil Medvedev get the win and advance to the Semi-Finals? Or will the young phenom Jannik Sinner cause the upset?
Daniil Medvedev has risen to a new career high ranking of world number two and has had a mixed start to the year in 2021. After reaching the Final of the Australian Open he stunningly lost in the Round of 16 in Rotterdam to Dusan Lajovic, in a match that he seemingly gave away, showing very little effort. It are these types of performances that have fans divided over him, and makes him hard to predict in these lower level ATP events. When he is fully focused and giving his all, he is clearly one of the best players in the world and capable of winning any event. He was very impressive in his Round of 16 win over Egor Gerasimov, winning 6-2, 6-4. This will be a very tough matchup for him and it will be interesting to see how focused he is here.
Jannik Sinner is currently ranked #34 and has firmly established himself as a star of the ATP Tour. He is considered by many to be a future top five player, and based on his results it is hard to argue with that assessment. Already with two ATP titles under his belt at the young age of 19 he is firmly on his way and is considered one of the favorites to lift the title here in Marseille. After a very difficult First Round win over Gregoire Barrere where he needed a third set tiebreaker to seal the deal, he was seemingly back to his best with a comprehensive win over young French star Hugo Gaston. He enters this match as the underdog but will be very confident in his abilities and certainly will not back down from the challenge.
While Medvedev is very difficult to predict at times, it is hard to go against him here. Sinner is a future Grand Slam winner and has a big game, but when Medvedev is fully locked in he is on a different level. He has not been at his best mentally lately, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the intensity that the young Italian is sure to bring. However, after receiving a lot of criticism for his Rotterdam performance I think that the new world #2 is eager to prove a point and should come through here. Daniil Medvedev to win in two tight sets.
