Third seeded Karen Khachanov of Russia will face Australian Matthew Ebden in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Marseille Open ATP event. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday March 12th, 2021 at a time yet to be determined. They have met once before with Khachanov leading the head to head series 1-0.
Can Matthew Ebden continue his good recent form and getting the upset? Or will the favored Karen Khachanov advance to his second Semi-Final of the season?
Karen Khachanov has been in relatively poor form over the past few seasons. Announcing himself on the world tennis scene by winning the Paris Masters in 2018 and breaking into the top 10, he has largely failed to live up to expectations. Still ranked #21, he has gotten off to a strong start in 2021, and is currently in good form after reaching the Quarter-Finals in Rotterdam last week. While he eventually lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas he was in control for a large portion of the match and will take a lot of confidence from that performance. With a big serve and huge forehand, these courts are perfectly suited to his game style and he will love his draw here. He enters this match as the overwhelming favorite.
Matthew Ebden is currently ranked #287 but has been as high as #39 in the world. A very solid player, he finds himself playing most of his tennis at the Challenger level these days as his career winds down. He has also suffered greatly with injuries, missing the majority of the past few seasons. However he has seen a resurgence of late, with a Quarter-Final appearance in Singapore a few weeks ago. After qualifying here, he was very impressive in his opening round win over Emil Ruusuvuori, dominating the talented Finn 6-2, 6-2. He enters this match as the big underdog, but will be very confident after his performances here so far and Khachanov has been known to be erratic at times. He will have to play perhaps the match of his life to cause the upset here.
While Ebden has looked solid so far, the outcome of this match is not in question and will be a comprehensive win for the Russian. Khachanov is not the player he once was but he has shown signs of regaining his top 10 form and should stroll to victory here. Karen Khachanov in straight sets.
