Second seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany faces unseeded countryman Dominik Koepfer in the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Acapulco Open in Mexico. The match is scheduled to be played on Friday March 19th, 2021 at 10:00pm EST.
This is a very surprising matchup as no-one could have predicted that the unseeded Dominik Koepfer would be here at this stage. However he has played some fantastic tennis and fully deserves to be here. Can he spring yet another upset here at the 2021 Acapulco Open? Or will the highly favored Alexander Zverev get the win and advance to his first final of the season?
Alexander Zverev has been in fine form so far here in Mexico, advancing to the Semi-Finals without breaking a sweat. He is yet to lose a set thus far, with straight-sets victories over Carlos Alcaraz and Laslo Djere. He then received a walkover in the Quarter-Finals when Casper Ruud unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury. While he would have been disappointed to win in that fashion, it allows him time to be fully rested and will be ready to go. With his big serve and huge baseline game he is very difficult to beat on this surface. Zverev has been much more aggressive than usual here and that tastic has been working extremely well. Expect much of the same in this match against Dominik Koepfer, and he enters this match as the overwhelming favorite.
Dominik Koepfer is currently ranked #71 and has played some great tennis so far here at the 2021 Acapulco Open, advancing to the Semi-Finals on the back of a very surprising upset over fourth seeded Milos Raonic in the Quarter-Finals. He has always been a very solid player, but even he could not have imagined he would be here at this stage. Like Alexander Zverev, he is an aggressive baseline player, with a great return of serve. That will be the key in this matchup, as his opponent has been known to struggle with his serve at times. While he enters this match as the underdog, he will be buoyed by his recent form and cannot be taken lightly.
While Koepfer has been in great form, this match will have only one result, and that is a straight-sets win for Alexander Zverev. He has been dominant here in Acapulco, and simply has a level of tennis that Dominik Koepfer cannot reach. Once he can keep his nerves in check, expect him to come away with a relatively easy win and advance to the Final here at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
